Popular Sierra Leonean comedian Kindo Armani has spoken out after a video of his performance at a recent state event caused debate online.
In a statement, he said the comments people reacted to were only jokes and not serious or political.
Kindo Armani had joked that the President should make sure the SLPP stays in power. He also added that comedians without visas might suffer if that does not happen.
Another joke about Sierra Leonean soldiers in Guinea also went viral, where he humorously claimed they now only understand the local language.
But the comedian said the clip was edited and shared in a way that changed the meaning.
“I’m responding out of respect for my fans who were misled,” he said.
He explained that comedy often uses real-life issues to make people laugh and think.
Kindo Armani added that not everyone has to like his jokes, but they should not be taken as serious statements.
