Labour Ministry Raises Minimum Wage, Tightens Systems

Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Labour has reviewed the national minimum wage, increasing it from NLe 800 to NLe 1,200, marking a shift toward stronger worker protection.

While the new wage does not fully meet rising living costs, the adjustment signals renewed attention to the realities faced by workers in both the public and private sectors. Officials say the change establishes a foundation for regular reviews instead of long-term stagnation.

The ministry has also digitised the work permit application process for foreign nationals. Payments now go directly into the Consolidated Fund, reducing delays, corruption risks, and revenue leakages.

Observers say the reforms show a growing focus on transparency, efficiency, and accountability within the labour sector, though enforcement and future wage reviews remain key challenges.
