The President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Alhaji Manika Kamara, has called for a stronger and more responsible media as Sierra Leone marks its 65th Independence Anniversary.

In his Independence message, Kamara congratulated Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad, saying the occasion is a time to reflect on the country’s progress and strengthen national unity.

He said journalists have a key responsibility in supporting democracy by promoting truth, accountability and public awareness.

Kamara reaffirmed SLAJ’s commitment to a free, independent and responsible press, adding that the media remains central to national development and stability.

He encouraged journalists to continue playing their role in amplifying citizens’ voices while maintaining professional standards.

Sierra Leone’s Independence Day is observed every year on April 27, marking the country’s freedom from British colonial rule in 1961.

This year’s celebration has been marked by messages of unity, patriotism and renewed calls for national development.
