For Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, a thriving democracy cannot be reduced to political pluralism, free speech, and periodic elections alone.
According to him, real democracy must deliver tangible results like; economic freedom, social inclusion, functional health facilities, affordable university education, access to finance for farmers, reliable water supply, uninterrupted electricity, and justice for all. Without these, he argues, democracy is an empty slogan.
“Sierra Leone is a rich nation with poor people,” Dr. Bangura maintains. “That is not because we lack resources. It is because we lack the sustainable leadership to harness them.”
As an economist, he believes fiscal discipline and the rule of law are the two non-negotiables for national development. With proper and judicious management of our resources, he says, Sierra Leone will not need to depend on Bretton Woods institutions for financial survival.
Dr. Bangura also warns against the cost of governance. A bloated wage bill and a large, inefficient government are, in his view, major drivers of economic decline. He has pledged to run a lean, fit-for-purpose government that eliminates institutional duplication where multiple institutions perform the same functions with minimal impact.
Beyond elections, Dr. Bangura advocates for a model of democracy rooted in community-led decision making. Such a model, he says, promotes deeper societal integration, reduces political gridlock and polarization, and ensures genuine representation.
For him, transformative democracy means affordable healthcare, pipe-borne water, adequate transportation, reliable electricity, and quality education, the things that change lives at the community level.
His 2028 vision is clear: to position Sierra Leone among the elite nations in the subregion by putting people and delivery at the center of governance.
